Welcome

July 2005

Dear Visitor,

Thanks for visiting my part of this website. I hope you enjoy laughing, groaning, and pondering. Oh, and reading. If so, you are in what used to be the right place. I’ve not done any fancy programming and design here; the focus is on archiving thoughts, interests, and pictures on the web. I have recently posted a version of my vita, which you are welcome to view and critique (oohs and ahs optional). I’ve started a list of reminiscences, cherished memories, which I’ll add to from time to time. This is all amusing and worthy of your attention, but if you want to keep truly up to date, check out my latest venture, which is a blog (naturally). I encourage you to check it out and post your own comments.  Please write me when you have a moment. I love getting mail.

Sincerely,
Michelle E.

Whatever I may seem to you, inside I am always ME
and that's a good thing

I AM a Gemini. Apparently that means I'm inherently outgoing. If you ever meet me you might notice I missed that astrological training session. However, I am quite chatty with all the people in my head--does that count? Born in California to parents from Ohio and New York, I have lived in Georgia, Northern Virginia, Boston, and Southeast Texas as well.  I have never learned the art of small talk. Life and people are too important to be made small.

I AM neither religious nor hedonistic. Moderation seems only logical to me, as does the idea that positive thinking is its own reward. There are several other beliefs I hold dear, but I will not force them upon you. Find your own way. Please keep looking and continue to think.

I AM who I am because of my family. I love them very much but do not demonstrate it like I feel it. I would like to be closer to people but tend to hold myself back.

I AM proud of myself, confident, joyful, ashamed, insecure, and distressed. Do I have to be one thing for everyone? I do not have a favorite color but people think of me in red or purple. I wear a lot of black.

I AM in love with reading, listening to music, generating ideas for stories and movies, and exploring new things. Love does not even seem to cover it. I am renewed and made whole by those things. Rarely do I finish one thing without having started a million others. Or maybe I should just say rarely do I finish anything. I am not without serious flaws.

I AM made complete by David, who is all of those cheesy things you see in romantic, "the one for me" movies. Together we will do wonderful things for the world; because we can, we should.

A different format (mostly Orkut), still about ME

about me: I've been a student, an admin, a teacher, an editor, an unemployed homebody. I've volunteered in a prison, a domestic violence shelter, and the foothills of California. I've ripped up lots of non-native vegetation. I'm allergic to aspartame. I started studying buddhism in 7th grade, which is also when I first came to know David. I am tremendously lacking in self discipline and am prone to anxiety attacks. I can't sleep without a blanket on me but I sleep warm naturally. I am a bit obsessive-compulsive. I was born old and self absorbed; I hope I'm regressing. Apparently I intimidate some people; I wish I could intimidate some others. I see the world through the lens of a mental movie, complete with soundtrack. Someday I'd like to write a novel and create an actual movie.

“The calm existence that is mine when I
Am worthy of myself.”  --Wordsworth

political view: depends. I’m very progressive in many ways and a tad conservative in others. I’d rather vote Green than Democrat, Democrat than Republican, Republican than Libertarian. But I don’t feel beholden to any political party or anti-party dogma.

humor: dry/sarcastic, friendly, obscure, occasionally silly, rarely raunchy

smoking: no. Blech.

drinking: no

pets: we have two future dogs in mind, Chester Snugglesworth MacLeash and Georg Gunther Geilhufe. I’m very allergic to cats. I love the zoo

hometown: #1 Sunnyvale, #2 Palo Alto

passions: self respect, unconditional love, and macaroni and cheese

petpeeves: wasted opportunities, mosquito bites, closed-mindedness

bad habits: becoming too impassioned too quickly in conversation, talk too much or too little, irrational worrying, procrastination

strengths: patient, thoughtful, self aware, respectful, dedicated, optimistic

sports: Much better watcher than player due to enthusiasm and lack of skill. I am a happy spectator. I love long bike rides over utterly flat terrain. I like to swim, but I’m not a great swimmer; I float very well. I want to get on a boat and sail far, far away someday.

activities: Live, breathe, smile. I like to cook, be outside, sail (though we lack a boat), hang out with David, learn new languages, and dream.

books: check out that page

music: the hiss of an LP. that electronic sequence at the end of a cassette tape.  there are songs I love so much that they make me physically hurt as I listen. For list of favorite musicians check out that page.

tv shows: check out that page

movies: food movies (especially foreign), anything with Kevin Bacon or John Cusack playing a good guy, romanticized British period piece dramas, 80's-early 90's teen/Gen-X flicks, Charlie Kaufman films, and anything that has all three: thoughtful script, is well acted, and rings true. For list and reviews, check out that page

foods: spinach, mushrooms, cheese, ham, potato, sparkling cider, hot tea (mmm, Constant Comment or Darjeeling), hot cocoa, ice cold Coke out of a glass, Diet RC, a Madness sundae from The Saturn Cafe, any of a large number of items at Hobee’s, Moons Over My Hammy from Denny’s (I know, I know), Thai food, Ethiopian food, Indian food, Mexican and Italian (naturally), falafel, soups, a nice stew, shrimp cocktail, balsamic vinegar...*sigh* I enjoy food maybe a bit too much.
